THE HISTORIC LONGORIA CEMETERY

THE HISTORIC LONGORIA CEMETERYTHE HISTORIC LONGORIA CEMETERYTHE HISTORIC LONGORIA CEMETERY

“After the lands were lost… Only one place remained.”

Juan Miguel Longoria built a ranching empire that was lost in part by a government that would not recognize Spanish land grants after the region became the Republic of Texas, then the United States of America.

His legacy is now Texas history.  Our inheritance is a family cemetery that carries RGV history and pride.

The Patriarch of the Santa Maria Longoria Branch

Juan Miguel Longoria (1815–1875) was a Rio Grande Valley rancher and family patriarch whose lineage traces to early Spanish settlers of the lower Rio Grande region. Born during Mexico’s territorial period in what is now South Texas, he became part of the Reynosa-area Longoria families who established ranching communities along the river frontier.

Longoria lived through a transformative era that included Mexican governance, the Texas Revolution, and the eventual incorporation of the region into the United States. Like many families of that period, the Longorias were engaged in ranching and land stewardship, helping shape the agricultural and cultural foundations of Cameron County and surrounding communities.

He is interred at Longoria Cemetery, a designated Historic Texas Cemetery located near Bluetown along Military Highway (U.S. 281). His above-ground brick tomb remains one of the most prominent features of the cemetery, symbolizing both his standing in the community and the enduring legacy of the Longoria family in the Rio Grande Valley.

Today, Juan Miguel Longoria is remembered as a foundational ancestor of many South Texas Longoria descendants, particularly those connected to the Reynosa line. and historical longoria cemetery
